XS-Speed Powermist water injection system

We have been running water injection with superchargers for several years and have found it very effective for providing additional knock protection with forced induction systems. Essentially the system works by spraying a very fine mist of water into the intake when the car is on-boost. This mist helps to absorb excess heat during the compression cycle, allowing more advanced timing and more boost to be run safely.

In designing our own system we looked at other systems available. Some of the cheaper systems make compromises by having diaphram pumps running relatively low water pressures giving poorer water atomisation. At the other end of the scale, the market leader runs a high pressure piston pump, but at a premium price. We did a lot of research to find a 200psi precision piston pump and have developed our own electronic drive module for it to give top end performance but at a keener price.

The other design principle has been to make the system compatible with components from the market leader Aquamist and so our system can be upgraded to include various mapped water injection setups.

Water injection systems in the past have been criticised for being fiddly and difficult to live with. We have developed a simple display unit with appropriate senders to give the user an indication of water flow, power and tank empty from the dash.

The production electronic driver module will be in die-cast alumninium and not in black plastic as shown in the photos.

The prototype system has been running on one of our cars since August last year and the production system is due out in May.

We also have Powermist injection fluid which will be available on www.mx5mad.com soon. This is a highly concentrate methanol based solution to act as an anti-freeze additive during the winter and increase power.
